Planitas Tacos

Plañitas, is an easier and tastier alternative to the Mexican classic carnitas.

You’ll need:

  • 1 can banana blossom

Remove from the can, drain the water, and squeeze out the remaining water from the flowers, don’t worry about breaking them apart.

Break the large pieces into chunks around bite-sized pieces. Add:

  • 2 tsp ground cumin

  • 1 tsp ground coriander

  • 1 tbsp tamari or soy sauce

  • Juice of 1 lime or lemon juice or vinegar

  • 1 tsp oregano

  • 1 tsp chipotle flakes or chipotle paste (optional)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder or 2 garlic cloves chopped

Mix together with the banana blossom and leave to marinate for at least 30 minutes. Then add:

  • 6 tbsp corn starch or tapioca starch

Mix all together until they’re mostly white on the outside.

Cooking it Crispy!

Before cooking, make sure you have your other ingredients prepared. To make classic carnitas, you’ll need pico de gallo & guacamole.

Shallow fry with around 6 tbsp of Vegetable Oil. You’ll need enough oil to make the outside extremely crispy that you can tell just by using some tongs or spatula.

Alternatively, you can add 2 tbsp of Vegetable Oil into place the pieces in a baking tray, add an extra drizzle of oil and bake at 200° for 25 minutes or until extra crispy.

To serve:

You’ll need you per person, around 3-4 small corn tortillas or small flour tortillas. Add some salsas such as pico de gallo, guacamole, mango salsa, and perhaps some chilli sauce if you like it hot.
